History
In March 2010 the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020, the very first global scale road safety program in human history, with the special support of over 90 countries including Hungary.
The awareness raising for road safety risks took its start on all continents on the 11th March 2011 in the spirit of motivation for taking action and emphasizing the importance of cooperation.
Budapest also saw grand events on the opening day, which were coordinated by GRSP Hungary and supported by the Ministry of National Development, the National Transport Authority, the National Accident Prevention Committee of the Hungarian National Police Headquarters, KTI Institute for Transport Sciences, Hungarian Auto Club, the WHO Country Office and other participants.
In the recent years Hungary has achieved significant results in improving road safety; however, in order to continue achieving such lasting improvements, further efforts and novel approaches are required besides maintaining the existent and successful preventive activities.
As part of the above and following prior consultation with the Secretariat for Transport Policy at the Ministry of National Development, KTI Institute for Transport Sciences, the National Transport Authority, the Budapest and Pest County Chamber of Engineers and 10 further participating organizations, under the coordination of the Hungarian Society for Transport Sciences (KTE), initiated the organizing of the Day of Transport Culture on the 11th May 2015 with the intention to set a tradition.
The initiative was accepted, thus the Day of Transport Culture organized for the first time on the 11th May 2015 was continued with success in 2016 with nearly 40 participant organizations promoting the importance of the transport culture through their programs and activities. One year later the number of partners exceeded 50.
Based on the feedback and the continuously growing interest we believed that the national event was well on its way, consequently the event was organized once again on the 11th May 2018 and over the surrounding days.
Upon the request of KTI the coordination tasks were carried out by the Transport Safety Division of KTE.
According to our concept the main focus in 2018 was extended beyond safety-conscious transport to cooperation and partnership. The 2018 motto was: Join us, become our partner!
These values were communicated directly to traffic participants through spectacular events and activities of high standard.
